Stunt coordination is a safety-critical leadership role
A stunt coordinator helps design action that serves the story while planning the people, rehearsal, equipment, departments, environment, medical response, and controls needed to execute it responsibly. SAG-AFTRA's standards describe proactive coordination with the assistant director, special effects, props, and other departments, plus safety meetings and supervision. Contract Services' industry-wide Safety Bulletin 4 places final safety approval for relevant stunt matters with the coordinator and calls for qualified rigging, equipment inspection, personal protective equipment, and a pre-performance walkthrough. These are not entry-level responsibilities. AI may help organize references, compare schedules, visualize movement, log equipment, or model nonbinding options. It cannot approve a stunt, certify a person, inspect gear, feel a surface, evaluate a performer's condition, or accept risk. A safe AI stunt workflow keeps experienced humans visibly accountable and treats simulation as planning evidence rather than permission to proceed.
Search for the wider action and stunt job family
Relevant searches include stunt performer, stunt double, utility stunt performer, stunt rigger, stunt driver, fight performer, fight coordinator, assistant stunt coordinator, stunt coordinator, second-unit stunt coordinator, action designer, action previsualization artist, stunt previs editor, motion-capture stunt performer, performance-capture coordinator, virtual production action specialist, and stunt data coordinator. Titles and qualification systems vary by country, union, guild, and production. Read the requirements instead of assuming athletic experience is enough. A performer may need deep specialty training and verified credits; a rigger needs load, hardware, inspection, and rescue knowledge; a previs artist needs cinematic timing and clear communication; a coordinator needs extensive performing experience, leadership, planning, and contractual knowledge. Confirm jurisdiction, roster or membership rules, insurance, certifications, travel, physical demands, rehearsals, equipment ownership, medical standards, and who has authority to stop work. Never embellish a safety qualification or attempt a specialty solely to obtain footage.
Start every sequence with requirements and hazard identification
Break the action into beats: who moves, where, when, with what equipment, near which people and hazards, under which environmental conditions, and what the camera must see. Identify height, speed, impact, fire, weapons, vehicles, water, animals, weather, visibility, fatigue, restricted spaces, and interactions between departments. Then consider elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment. The NIOSH hierarchy of controls is a general occupational-safety framework, while production bulletins provide film-specific guidance. A visual effect or alternate camera angle may remove an unnecessary exposure; a barrier or engineered rig may reduce it; rehearsal, exclusion zones, and briefings support the plan. AI can structure a checklist from approved inputs, but it cannot know every location condition or specialty failure mode. The coordinator and qualified department leads must inspect, ask questions, and revise when reality differs from the plan.
Previsualization communicates action but does not prove safety
Action previs can use storyboards, rehearsal video, edit animatics, 3D blocking, virtual cameras, game engines, motion capture, or combinations of them. It helps the director, coordinator, cinematographer, visual-effects team, assistant directors, performers, and production understand timing, coverage, geography, resets, and handoffs. Epic documents previs and live-camera workflows in Unreal Engine that let teams scout and frame digital scenes. A useful stunt previs labels assumptions: performer path, camera position, set dimensions, speed, effects, rigging concept, digital-double transition, and unresolved questions. It is not an engineering calculation or rehearsal. A digital character can survive impossible acceleration and a virtual lens can pass through a hazard. Keep creative visualization separate from the safety plan, technical drawings, equipment ratings, and on-site approvals. When conditions change, update both the sequence and the controls rather than treating an old animation as the authoritative plan.
Treat rigging, vehicles, weapons, fire, and falls as specialties
Different action categories require qualified specialists, dedicated equipment, and applicable laws or permits. The Contract Services safety library contains separate bulletins for stunts, firearms, helicopters, vehicles, pyrotechnics, water, motorcycles, edged and projectile props, drones, camera cranes, gimbals, and freefall catch systems. Use the current bulletin relevant to the actual task and follow stricter legal, studio, manufacturer, or site requirements where they apply. Inspect and document equipment, remove defective items, and involve structural or engineering expertise when required. Do not combine generic AI instructions with internet videos to design a rig or weapon effect. A language model cannot validate material condition, dynamic load, modification, operator competence, or environmental change. Candidates can learn terminology and observation protocols, but hands-on specialty work belongs in legitimate training and supervised professional progression. Safety credibility comes from limits as much as capability.
Use digital doubles to reduce exposure without erasing performers
Digital doubles can extend a movement, support a transition, alter a background, remove rigging, or depict action that should not be performed physically. The coordinator, performer, visual-effects supervisor, director, and production should agree on what is captured and how the physical and digital work connect. A safer digital solution is valuable, but it does not justify taking unauthorized scans or replacing credited stunt work without disclosure. Distinguish reference photography, body scan, motion capture, facial capture, costume scan, and a reusable digital replica. Set approved purpose, access, security, retention, credit, compensation, and reuse terms. SAG-AFTRA's AI guidance emphasizes consent and negotiated conditions for digital-replica use in covered production. Do not assume a release for one sequence permits a model, game, sequel, advertisement, or training dataset. Document the exact handoff so editorial and visual effects know where recorded performance ends and synthetic alteration begins.
Apply AI only where the failure can be caught safely
Lower-risk uses may include searching approved shot logs, transcribing meetings, comparing document versions, organizing reference, summarizing equipment records, or flagging missing fields. Higher-risk proposals include predicting injury, certifying a rig, choosing protective equipment, authorizing a performer, calculating an unfamiliar dynamic system, or replacing an emergency plan. Do not delegate those decisions to a model. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework encourages organizations to govern, map, measure, and manage AI risks over time. For a stunt department, that means naming an owner, defining the permitted task, protecting confidential inputs, testing known failure cases, recording model and version, requiring qualified review, and preserving a manual fallback. If the output can change a safety decision, the reviewer needs competence and enough time to inspect it. Automation should reduce clerical load around expertise, not create a polished document that hides the absence of expertise.
Protect performer identity, consent, and biometric data
Action work may generate body scans, facial images, motion data, voice, measurements, injury information, rehearsal video, and performance patterns. These records can be sensitive and commercially valuable. Explain the purpose and approved use before capture, minimize collection, restrict access, use secure transfer, and set retention and deletion responsibilities. SAG-AFTRA publishes AI terms and contract resources that distinguish types of digital replicas and reinforce informed consent in covered work. Even where a particular agreement does not apply, do not hide synthetic replacement inside a generic camera release. Never upload performer footage or scans to an unapproved AI service. Make it possible to trace a final digital action back to authorized recordings, edits, and approvals. Security is also a physical-safety issue: leaked previs can expose locations, methods, schedules, or vulnerabilities. Coordinate with production security and privacy leaders rather than improvising a personal storage workflow.
Coordinate every department affected by the action
A stunt can involve directing, assistant directing, camera, grip, electric, locations, art, construction, props, weapons, special effects, visual effects, costume, hair, makeup, sound, transportation, animals, marine, medical, security, and post-production. Identify an owner for each dependency and a time when it must be confirmed. Wardrobe can restrict movement or interact with a harness; camera placement can enter an escape route; atmospheric effects can change visibility; a reset can alter a surface; a digital-double plan can change required reference capture. Hold targeted technical meetings before the general safety meeting. Use diagrams and plain language, then verify shared understanding. AI can turn approved notes into department-specific checklists, but it must not invent an agreement. Keep a change log and make material revisions visible. The coordinator's creative value comes partly from designing an exciting sequence that all these departments can execute together without hidden assumptions.
Keep records that support action, review, and incident response
Production records may include script pages, action breakdowns, participant lists, qualifications, equipment inspections, rehearsal notes, diagrams, permits, safety bulletins, meeting attendance, medical arrangements, weather checks, change approvals, capture permissions, and incident reports. Requirements differ, so use the production's approved forms and retention policy. Record facts promptly and avoid speculative language. If an incident or near miss occurs, prioritize care and the official response process; do not use AI to rewrite a witness account or generate a conclusion. Preserve original evidence and route communication through authorized leaders. For routine AI-assisted administration, save the source and reviewed output so errors can be traced. Good documentation is not a shield for unsafe work. It helps teams prepare, communicate, learn, and demonstrate which decisions were made by qualified people with the information available at the time.
Build a portfolio without performing dangerous action for a reel
Create an action design for a safe, controlled fictional brief using storyboards, blocking diagrams, a simple 3D animatic, department questions, a risk register, and a communication plan. Clearly state that the document is a portfolio exercise and not an executable stunt plan. Show how you changed a shot to reduce unnecessary exposure, separated digital from physical work, and identified specialist review. Previs candidates can demonstrate camera clarity, timing, naming, version control, and editable handoff. Performers should use professionally supervised footage they are permitted to share and accurately identify their contribution. Never attempt a high fall, vehicle maneuver, weapon sequence, fire effect, or improvised rig for content. If AI assists with an animatic or notes, disclose it and show human corrections. A credible portfolio demonstrates judgment, collaboration, limits, and communication rather than escalating danger to look impressive.
Write resumes and interviews around verifiable responsibility
List legitimate training, memberships, rosters, certifications, specialties, productions, coordinators, and exact roles. Do not call yourself a coordinator after arranging an unsupervised short or claim a specialty based on recreational participation. Previs and technical candidates should explain software through the action workflow they supported. Use bullets that identify the sequence, your task, the qualified supervision, and an outcome you can defend without revealing confidential methods. In interviews, expect changing weather, a performer concern, an unavailable double, a camera request inside an exclusion zone, a damaged piece of equipment, or a proposed digital replacement. Explain that work can stop, what gets rechecked, who has authority, and how alternatives reach the director and production. Responsible employers value clear boundaries. Anyone pressuring a candidate to conceal risk, waive required controls, or improvise beyond competence is revealing a serious problem with the job.
Follow a supervised path into stunt and action work
Research the recognized pathway in the country and production sector where you intend to work. Legitimate routes may involve union or guild requirements, experience rosters, safety training, specialty instruction, supervised set work, and documented credits. Develop broad physical literacy and one or more genuine specialties without assuming gym skill equals screen competence. Learn production communication, camera awareness, continuity, first aid appropriate to your context, and the current safety resources. Previs artists can enter through animation, editorial, virtual production, or visual effects while learning directly from experienced action teams. In the first month, study the current stunt bulletin, observe a legitimate supervised process if accessible, and build a safe planning case study. Long-term progression depends on trust earned through preparation, honesty, calm communication, and respect for stop authority. Technology changes the planning toolkit; it does not shorten the experience required to lead hazardous work.
